Freedom Festival Hull
International Arts, Outdoor Theatre, Live Music, and Waterfront Culture.
Posted on 15th August 2026
Transforming the streets, public squares, and historic docks of Kingston upon Hull into a world-class outdoor stage, Freedom Festival returns as East Yorkshire's flagship international arts event.
Established in 2008 to celebrate the legacy of Hull MP and abolitionist William Wilberforce, Freedom Festival has grown into one of the UKβs premier outdoor arts festivals. Managed by the Freedom Festival Arts Trust, the multi-day spectacle brings world-renowned international performers, contemporary circus artists, musicians, and street theatre companies together in the heart of Hull.
What to Expect Across the City πͺβ¨
The festival footprint stretches across Hullβs historic centre, connecting key cultural quarters and public spaces:
- Outdoor Street Theatre & Contemporary Circus: High-wire acrobatics, large-scale spectacle performances, and interactive pop-up theatre taking place in Queen Victoria Square and Trinity Square.
- Fruit Market & Marina Hubs: Live music stages, contemporary dance showcases, and pop-up food markets lining Humber Street and the waterfront.
- Illuminated Evening Spectacles: Large-scale evening art installations, projection mapping, and fire shows lighting up public spaces after dark.
- Exhibitions & Debate: Thought-provoking talks, visual art exhibitions, and spoken word performances reflecting on themes of human rights, freedom, and social justice at Hull Minster and local galleries.
