Illuminated Whitby Abbey returns for the autumn Halloween season, casting the famous 13th-century Gothic ruins above the town in a spectrum of colorful after-dark lighting.

Organized by English Heritage, the event invites visitors to explore the cliff-top headland after dark. Known worldwide as Bram Stoker’s inspiration for Dracula, the historic landmark pairs dramatic lighting displays with live outdoor performances, storytelling, and local food traders.

Running from Friday 23rd October to Saturday 31st October 2026, the site opens each evening from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. Visitors follow a designated light trail surrounding the abbey walls and headland, with family-friendly entertainment running throughout the night.

Key attractions and features during the evening light event include:

• Dramatic Light Trail: Colorful floor-to-ceiling floodlighting transforming the arches, nave, and stone ruins of the headland landmark.
• Live Dracula Storytelling: Family-focused interactive theatre performances bringing Bram Stoker's legendary tale to life amongst the shadows of the ruins.
• Gothic Fancy Dress: Dressing up in Halloween or Victorian Gothic costumes is widely encouraged for all ages.
• Festive Food & Drink Stalls: Outdoor vendors offering hot food, warm drinks, snacks, and marshmallow-toasting fire pit areas.
