Free Light Art Trail, Festive Switch-On & Illuminated Street Parade

Wakefield city centre is set to transform into a outdoor gallery of light, creativity, and spectacle as Light Up Wakefield returns on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November 2026. Running daily from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, this free two-day festival brings larger-than-life installations, interactive digital projections, live stage entertainment, street food, and a spectacular illuminated parade to West Yorkshire.
Friday 13th November: Festive Light Switch-On ๐โจ
The festival weekend officially launches on Friday evening with the city's Christmas light switch-on celebrations:
๐ Cathedral Precinct (5:30 PM Switch-On)
Head to the Cathedral Precinct from 5:00 PM for live performances from local musicians and community acts on the main stage, compered by Rhubarb Radio. At 5:30 PM, the official switch-on ceremony takes place, switching on the Christmas lights and launching the 2026 Nature-Themed Light Art Trail across the city centre.

Saturday evening brings a moving, theatrical highlight to the streets of Wakefield:

A breathtaking outdoor parade celebrating the revival of wildlife across Wakefield's rivers, meadows, and moors. Led by a towering, illuminated Mother Nature figure, glowing creatures, puppets, and community performers emerge through the city streets in a luminous tribute to ecological recovery.

Local historic building facades become dynamic canvases for 3D laser mapping, motion artwork, and light displays.

The newly redeveloped WX Wakefield Exchange serves as the central hub for festival-goers across both days:

Stop by WX during the evening to pick up physical trail maps, warm up, and sample local street food and drinks. WX also hosts one of the trailโs key light art installations alongside accessible toilet and Changing Places facilities.

Arriving by Train
Wakefield Westgate Station is an 11-minute walk to WX. Wakefield Kirkgate Station is approximately a 17-minute walk to the Cathedral Precinct.
Parking Facilities
Convenient multi-storey and blue badge parking is available at Trinity Walk Shopping Centre (WF1 1QQ) and The Ridings Shopping Centre (WF1 1DS).
Accessibility
The Cathedral Precinct and city pedestrian routes are step-free. Changing Places facilities are located at both WX Wakefield and Trinity Walk.
Admission & Booking
The entire event is completely free with no pre-booking required. Simply turn up between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM on either evening.
