Cannon Museum Hall and Gardens

The rooms at the Museum include both historic room settings and gallery displays of artworks spanning the centuries. We are also delighted to host ‘A Family of Artists’ exhibition with the De Morgan Foundation.

Wombwell Woods

Very old woodland with a footprint that dates back to at least the Doomsday Book. A mix of broadleaved wood and open spaces make this a lovely spot for a walk, great views over Wombwell and lots of wildlife to see.

Locke Park

There are 47 acres of Barnsley's Locke Park, only a mile from Barnsley's town centre, with gardens, trees and open grass, historic tower and bandstand, bowls green and children's play area.

Rabbit Ings Country Park

Rabbit Ings is a country park located on the former colliery yard and spoil heap of the Monkton Colliery and then the Royston Drift Mine, which closed in 1989. The 64-hectare site, situated near Royston in South Yorkshire, is home to an array of wildlife – including newts, snakes and herons.

Worsborough Mill

Ruins of Monk Bretton Priory

Monk Bretton Priory

On the edge of Barnsley stand the substantial remains of Monk Bretton Priory, a Cluniac monastery founded in the 12th century. Today visitors can see the unusually well-marked ground plan, the almost complete west range and the 15th century gatehouse.

Wentworth Castle Gardens

Visit the formal Union Jack Gardens, Lady Lucy's lime tree walk or wander the 500 acres of parkland. Young family members can take the castle challenge around the gardens.

Elsecar Heritage Centre

One of the UK's first model villages, Elsecar is being lovingly restored. The village is now a much-loved place to visit, with independent shops and cafes, artist and maker studios, antiques centre and walking routes.

This wildlife haven is less than a mile from Barnsley Town Centre and extends for two miles along the River Dearne. At the centre of the Park is the River Dearne, now so full of life that this is one of the best places to see kingfishers in the Valley at any time of year.
