From Brontë Country to Global Wonder: The Kings Nature Reserve Bradford Pennine Gateway

Condé Nast Traveller has officially named the Bradford Pennine Gateway Park as one of its Seven Wonders of the World for 2026. A huge recognition of a landscape that is both culturally significant and environmentally important. Coming off the back of the incredible Bradford 2025, year as the UK City of Culture.

The Bradford Pennine Gateway isn’t just one park; it’s a mosaic of eight iconic sites, including Ilkley Moor, Baildon Moor, and Shipley Glen, covering a massive, 1,272-hectare. It was designated as West Yorkshire’s first National Nature Reserve and part of the King’s Series in 2025

Here is why the experts at Condé Nast were so captivated:

Literary Legend : This is the landscape that birthed Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. The moody, heather-clad moors of Penistone Hill and Haworth aren't just scenery; they are characters in their own right.

Biodiversity and Conservation 90% of the reserve consists of "priority habitats." such as ancient peat bogs, and heathlands that provide a rare sanctuary for the haunting call of the curlew, the golden plover, and the short-eared owl.

Urban - Rural ConnectionsIt is one of the few places in the world where you can hop off a city bus and be in a globally significant wilderness within minutes. It’s "nature on the doorstep" for over half a million people.
