Aysgarth Rock Garden Parks and Gardens

wrought iron fence at the entrance to Aysgarth Rock Garden, with the limestone rocks in the garden in the background.

Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden, a unique hidden gem in the village of Aysgarth in the Yorkshire Dales. Full of limestone rocks, succulents and winding pathways the garden is easily missed but is definitely worth a stop.

Situated on the A684 the rock garden sits behind a wrought iron fence. There is no charge to visit, however donations are welcome in the donation box close to the entrance.

The garden was created between 1906 and 1914 by Frank Sayer Graham. York based Backhouse & Son, were asked to design and build the rock garden across from his cottage. The aim was to build a "walk through grotto", it's definitly been achieved. The limestone rocks were moved to the site from a nearby moor.

The garden is not very big, has gravel paths, winding pathways, a small waterfall and a couple of seating areas. It doesn't take to visit, but is a unique and "otherwordly" experience and definitely worth the stop.

The garden is in fact a Listed Building! Listed to prevent the garden being destroyed.

There is a small layby on Aysgarth very close to the garden, owners request that there is no parking in front of the garden and any parking away from the layby is considerate of locals. Footpaths are gravel, there are steps and winding path ways, with rocks overhead.
